Old Hollywood VS New Hollywood.

Old Hollywood VS new Hollywood

101 Dalmatains (old)

The film is about two Dalmatians that have 101 Dalmatian puppies, and the owners feel as though they can not look after them all properly, so a woman comes along (Cruella De Ville) and tries to kidnap all the puppies. This film in 1969 earned a rough profit of $320.6 million. The target audience of this film is 6-30, as it is supposed to be a children's film, however it also connects with adults, as adults are also featured in the film. The film was one that turned out to be a complete classic and has been re-made over and over again in different ways to become more modern. The film director was Steven Herek, The 1969 version of this film is still played to this day, but is seen as very dated and not many people who are the new generation will want to watch this particular one, they will want to watch the new 2016 one that is due to come out.

101 Dalmatians (new)

The new 101 Dalmatians film is supposed to come out in 2016, by this film coming out this year, it creates an extreme sense of moderninity to do with this re-make compared to the first film made in 1969. It conveys the same storyline, but most things will probably be edited to highlight things that people are interested in from this generation. The editing will be better in this film due to the fact of the different cameras that will be used as they are very high tech compared to the first one from 50 years ago. There will be more different types of camera shots used also, there will be stars in this film which will also create a secondary target audience as fans of that star will want to watch it as well seeing as they will be in it. This creates a good sense of audience.

Director case study - Steven Spielberg

Steven Spielberg.

'I'm not really interested in making money.'
'Once a month the sky falls on my head, I come to and I see another movie I want to make.'

Steven Spielberg is an America director, producer, screenwriter and editor, a man of many talents. He is viewed as being of of the most famous and well known directors in history. Spielberg has created many films in different genres, for example 'Jaws' and 'The BFG'. By him creating different films in such different genres, it shows he has complete imagination and is very talented. In the early years of Spielberg he created many science fiction ad adventure films, so you can see how he has developed by completing a film in nearly every genre that there is. In his later years, he started to connect his films to address humanistic issues such as the Holocaust and terrorism in films such as 'The colour purple' and 'Empires of the sun'

Spielberg has been making films for over 4 decades, and one of his first films was the film 'Jaws'. Jaws was a massive hit with most people as they have never seen anything like it before. This film lifted him up in the industry and potentially got him to where he is now. Spielberg's mother was an Orthodox Jew, as this was the case, in later life i feel as though that is why Spielberg created films concerning the Holocaust, as it relates back to him and his past with his family and background. Spielberg used to deny being an Orthodox Jew to protect himself from being isolated and left alone, but now that he is where he is, he is proud to say that being a Jew helped him in ways that he couldn't do himself. By him being a Jew, that is how we got some of the best films from Spielberg.

Spielberg's first professional career came about when he was asked to help direct of of the segments i the 1969 pilot episode of 'night gallery'. This would star Jane Crawford, but apparently Crawford was horrified and worried about a 21 year old 'newbie' directing a film that she was involved in, her attitude was said to have changed after she started working with Spielberg and after realising how promising he was. This is a quote as to what Crawford said about Spielberg: 'When I began to work with Steven, I understood everything. It was immediately obvious to me, and probably everyone else, that here was a young genius. I thought maybe more experience was important, but then I thought of all of those experienced directors who didn't have Steven's intuitive inspiration and who just kept repeating the same old routine performances. That was called "experience." I knew then that Steven Spielberg had a brilliant future ahead of him. Hollywood doesn't always recognize talent, but Steven's was not going to be overlooked. I told him so in a note I wrote him. I wrote to Rod Serling, too. I was so grateful that he had approved Steven as the director. I told him he had been totally right'.

Spielberg was and is still known to be one of the most famous directors of our time and in history, as he has an amazing imagination which he can do what he wants with and a complete open mind.

Defining the film industry.

Defining the film industry.

Pre-production

Pre production is the start of production before it gets sent to see if it it is acceptable to be made into something more. Pre-production includes: cast members; finance; director; producer, cinematographer etc. After the pre-production is finalised the screenplay is also completed and is up to the high standards of the financiers. Pre -production also includes the background to the film such as: location; props; cast members; costumes, special effects and also visual aspects like camera shots and angles. After this part is created, everything becomes available to the people who are going to be creating the film such as the crew. The start dates are then also finalised as well as the crew cast and start dates for everything to be ready by so they can go ahead. There also tends to normally be a whole cast script read so anyone who doesn't understand parts can ask questions and they can get more of a feel of the script and storyline, the script then adds number pages to avoid any further confusion added to the script.

Production
Production is where the film is started to be created and shot, seeing as it is going to be shot, more crew will then need to be hired as there will be more jobs and things to do to ensure it is completed by the deadline date, these jobs could include:

  • Script supervisor
  • Property master
  • Assistant Directors
  • photo editor
  • stills photographer
  • Sound Editors

The start of the day starts by the crew arriving on sets to start their jobs for the day, the crew usually have the same call times whereas the actors have different call times, there are many things that have to be done days in advance such as dressing, lighting, set construction, so as that is already done days ahead of the actual start date, while scenes are being filmed, the crew is one step ahead of everyone else as they already have one more thing done.

The crew then have to gather their equipment and ensure they have everything that they are going to need, actors are put through to wardrobe and makeup also so that they are ready. The actors then run through the script with each other and the directors, the camera and sound crew then also rehearse with them to  make sure that they are ready for final cuts of the scenes.

Finally, at the end of the day the director gives times for the next days of filming so that everyone is prepared for it, the film shots are then also edited.

Post-Production - when the film is edited and put together by the film director, music is recorded and added  and any CGI effects are also added.

Distribution

Distribution is the stage where the film is finally released to the cinemas and is distributed to everyone, by different ways such as DVD's (blu-ray) or available download from computers. The film is duplicated as required and then is also available for screening for the cinemas to show. Posters are also advertised to ensure that the word is out that the film is now out and can be watched, which increases audiences and profit for the film. Film distributors to ensure they get as much publicity as possible usually have red carpet premiers for their film as a launch party which gives them the opportunity to have interviews with the press and advertise their film to an even bigger extent. The film is then released to a few small cinemas, and if all goes well, then it is put through for screening with bigger cinemas in bigger ways.

Independant film making

independent film making includes when they are making a film on their own, using home edits and creating their own sound for non diegetic sound effects. However, traditional and financing could decrease the marketing of this film and could remain difficult to publish and advertise it.

Tile sequence of Batman vs Superman

In the title sequence for Batman Vs Superman, it straight away conveys and shows that Warner Bros's are a part of this film, they have put this in the first section part of the film so that it straight away interests the audience more as Warner Bros are never known to be a part of a bad selling film. The writing is in white but is on a black misty background so is recognisable to the extent that it will catch peoples eyes and people will want to continue watching it. Where is states the actors names, it helps that it is in white as it makes the names stand out more, so when people see the name 'Ben Affleck' they straight away realise that a good actor is in the film, and fans of him will be more interested in watching it. It then continues to show the rest of the actors names following behind and then the film title.

In the opening sequence, it also contains the famous superman logo, this crates interest for the audience as they know that all superman films are good, so when they see the superman logo they get excited and anticipate as to what they are about to watch, which creates many different ideas of effects within the sequence.

In the title sequence it also contains the words 'Batman V Superman Dawn of justice' the Dawn of Justice part of this short sentence creates effect of what is about to happen? Why is there justice? How? the rhetorical questions it creates also could enlarge the target audience as more people talk about films when there is an obvious twist, therefore more people will want to go and see this film to see what happens.

As the title sequence only shows the Superman logo, this could be seen as biased as to who will win this 'war' and could give things away about the film before anyone even watches it. The screen also changed from grey to black to green to red, which are bold colours in their own way as they all connote something for example green connotes jealousy, red connotes blood, black connotes darkness etc, so there are many different effects created by these colours being the main colours shown.
