Developing an awareness of audience.

Developing an awareness of audience.

Everything that is media based (films, articles etc) are made up of things that will target a certain audience. For example, The Conjuring 2 is target for the audience that like horror films, so to make sure that they react to that film how the directors want them too, they have to include certain aspects such as a variety of age, gender, race etc. To ensure that the audience is engaged with it, they have too also include things that the audience likes instead of dislikes. This is because, if the film doesn't do as well as anticipate, the directors lose the profit of money they were expected to make, and then they do not get their particular message across that they originally wanted too. In some cases films have secondary audiences when they include things that people outside of that particular audience like, which increases the profit of films. Media groups have an advantage whereas they can use questionnaires/surveys to see what people like, and some of the things they include are:

  • Gender
  • Age
  • Race
  • Location
  • Income status

Below is an example of popular social media sites now and their percent of 'U.S' users.

They also tend to analyse income brackets for demographics which is also shown below. (There are letter codes shown)

After a media text is created, they also look at:

  • trailers
  • print, radio, TV and internet advertisements
  • posters
  • promotional interviews
  • merchandising
  • tie in campaigns
